Investment Philosophy

Investment Philosophy:

Hopkins Capital Management, Inc.'s investment style is based around a conservative strategy designed to achieve above average real returns with below average levels of financial and market risk. We believe in the merits of a balanced portfolio of high-grade common stocks and fixed income securities. For clients who prefer, we will manage equities alone. Through the appropriate mix of portfolio assets among equities, bonds and cash, we look to increase capital in real terms during favorable market conditions and to preserve principal in down markets. In selecting appropriate investments, we look to time-tested investment constants, namely: price, value, quality, liquidity, and the preservation of principal.

Equity Selection:

H.C.M.'s equity selection is based on the principle that superior stock selection provides the most reliable opportunity for generating excess returns.

Our investment process strives to anticipate and identify changes in longer-term trends that may provide investment opportunities and then looks to select those sectors of the economy and companies that appear most promising. We seek long-term organic growth as well as current income by investing primarily in the common stocks of large, established companies with sound fundamentals and leading market shares. Individual company analysis focuses on organic growth prospects as well as increasing earnings, cash flow, and underlying asset worth.

We believe excessive diversification can dilute investment performance and are reluctant to accept more risk than is justified by our clients' needs. Equity holdings are thus limited in the number of individual companies with a typical portfolio owning a dozen or so positions that are generally core holdings. Consistent with our philosophy of long-term results, turnover is relatively low.

Technical analysis is employed in monitoring individual equity holdings and in observing changes in the overall market. It also helps us to identify new potential investments and flag current holdings that may warrant further scrutiny.

To supplement our internal research, we routinely tap outside experts, consultants, and sources of company and economic data.
